Hello, my name is Jessie Mackrell and I am the 73rd Queen of the Chesapeake. I am a senior at Kent Island High School, and to pursue my love for art and design, I am taking a honors 2-D art class and participate in a photography club. I am also a proud member of "We The People" which is a group in my school that spreads awareness of social issues and works to bring people together despite their differences. After I graduate, I plan to attend Salisbury University and major in art.
My home club is Kent Island Yacht Club (KIYC). My family and I have been members of KIYC for as long as I can remember. KIYC and the Chesapeake Bay are second homes to me, as I've grown up on the bay and have been boating, fishing, and crabbing since I was little.
For the past 2 years as Princes, my charity has been Bay Love. Bay Love is the collaboration between me and The Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center (CBEC), a nonprofit charity located in Grasonville, Maryland. The CBEC actively works towards the restoration and protection of our Bay. Over the years, I have raised money for CBEC by doing bake sales at my club's Turkey Shoots. To continue my support of CBEC, my mom and I collect used bottle caps and make and sell bottle cap art. This project helps keep some of the bottle caps off our beaches and from harming our sea life. This year, I made and sold Bay Love reusable straws at my club to help reduce plastic straw usage. All proceeds from the sale of straws went directly to CBEC to help with their mission.
My home club has several events each year in which I participate. One is "Best Kids Day Ever". This event is held around Christmas and volunteers dress up as Disney characters and we have fun activities for groups of kids. Another event is to collect donations for the Haven Ministries Homeless shelter during the holidays. In my life, I enjoy going out with friends and trying new things. This year I got my boaters certification, so I can spend more time boating with my family and yacht club members.
My goal as 2020 Queen of the Chesapeake is to bring the community together and to make sure every Princess coming into the program feels important, accepted, confident, and comfortable.
